Detroit Lakes real estate includes at least 400 of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes in a scenic community in Becker County, approximately 45 miles east of the Fargo, North Dakota area. This community in northwest Minnesota has approximately 9,000 year-round residents. The area grows during the summer when visitors come to the lakes for fishing, boating, golf and music festivals. The town is 15.20 square miles with five square miles of water.

Shopping and Dining

This is an outdoor living area most of the year and clothing retailers offer sportswear for all seasons. The Washington Square Mall in the downtown area features chain stores and local services. Embellish Resale Boutique and Redwillow at Lakeshirts are local clothing, housewares and accessories stores. Norah's Home Furnishings supplies the area.

Casual dining includes the Chinese Dragon and La Barista Coffee and Gifts. The Fireside Restaurant is a landmark on Big Detroit Lake.

Fifteen chain and local hotels are part of Detroit Lakes real estate. This includes the award-winning Lodge on Lake Detroit, a Best Western affiliate. This hotel is open year-round for summer and winter sports.

August is the time for the WE Fest at Soo Pass Ranch in a natural amphitheater on the shores of Lake Sallie. This annual three-day concert features top country music entertainers. Campers are permitted on the ranch along with concession stands.

Recreation and Parks

This section of Minnesota is devoted to outdoor recreation and exploration. The 500-mile International Pine to Prairie Birding Trail starts at Detroit Lakes on Highway 59 and extends north to Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. The trail includes 68 bird-viewing sites for Trumpeter Swans, larkspurs, Ospreys, Sandhill cranes and numerous waterfowl.

The Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge is a 43,000 acre tract for black bear, porcupines, raccoons and other animals. It includes 20 lakes, rivers and swamps with marked hiking trails for explorers.

Detroit Lakes real estates has over 250 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and areas for cross-country skiing. Downhill skiing and snowboarding are also available at Detroit Mountain Recreation Area. Ice fishing is available on most of the lakes that usually get 15 or more inches of snow and ice. Ice fishing derbies are held during the winter.

Winter sports are held indoors at Kent Freeman Sports Arena. Hockey, ice skating and curling are offered at this facility. The Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center is open year-round with an indoor heated Olympic size swimming pool, waterslide, racquet ball courts, fitness center and the Backyard indoor play area for kids.

Golf courses replace winter sports in the spring with the Ironman Golf Course, Forest Hills GC, Wildflower GC, Lake View GC and the Detroit Lakes Country Club. The Pine to Palm Golf Tournament is held annually at the country club. It is one of three PGA resort circuit tournament courses in Minnesota.

Most of the larger lakes have boat launches and facilities for summer water sports. More than 15 public launch areas are open for fishing for walleye, trout, pike and perch along with and other activities during warm weather.

Lifestyle

This is a community for people who enjoy the outdoor life all year. Minnesotan are never too far from a lake and water view property is everywhere in the Detroit Lakes area. Homes of all sizes can be built or purchased on lakes or on acreage near lakes.

A three bedroom/two-bathroom home on acreage can be found in the $250,000 range. Larger homes and lakefront mansions in the million dollar range are also available. Many people have summer vacation cabins on the lakes.

June features the Street Faire at the Lakes in the downtown area with an arts and crafts show. This juried event features the work of 125 artists, music, food and events for children.

Schools, Healthcare, and Transportation

Detroit Lakes School District #22 has two elementary, one middle school and a high school. The district offers special education programs and it has an alternative high school. There are three private religious schools.

A branch of the Minnesota Community and Technical College is part of Detroit Lakes real estate. This is one of four campuses of this college that offers associate degrees in 70 different fields.

Essentia Health St. Mary's is the local hospital serving Detroit Lakes real estate. This is an 87-bed acute care facility. The health care provider also has walk-in clinics in the area for residents.

Sanford Health Clinic, based in Fargo, has facilities in Detroit Lakes.

Amtrak has a station near downtown and the region is served by Becker County Transit. Detroit Lakes Aviation provides local air service from the county airport. Many private airplanes land on the larger lakes.

Detroit Lakes is a place to visit and live for people who enjoy outdoor life in a pleasant lakeside community.
