Moorhead is a rich agricultural region created from glacial silt deposits left behind 10,000 years ago. While farming remains predominant in the area, the area is also home to a variety of corporate, manufacturing and distribution industries. Among those are American Crystal Sugar, Busch Agricultural Resources and Pactiv, a container manufacturing company. Besides offering a quality of life that is very favorable, the unemployment rate in the Moorhead/Fargo area is consistently below the national average.

Fargo has regularly shown up on Money magazine's list of most livable cities thanks to its low crime rates and affordable living, while its downtown has undergone a steady revitalization in recent years. In 2012, Forbes magazine ranked Fargo as the second-best small city in the country to start a business or career.

The Moorhead School District provides K-12 education to over 5,000 students and includes Moorhead High School. The district constructed new buildings and remodeled existing ones thanks to a $64 million investment in 2004. The district is known for its high student achievement. The Fargo Public Schools includes 22 buildings and services over 11,000 students.
